THE LAVA CAKE STRAIN: A DECADENT CANNABIS TREAT

The dessert classification of weed strains has exploded over the last decade. Fruit, funk, and gas used to rule the cannabis landscape, but it's been a different story ever since the Cookie family hit the scene.

The Lava Cake strain is one lusciously sweet variety that perfectly personifies the dessert category. With a deliciously rich flavor profile, deeply relaxing effects, and a family tree that resembles a high-end recipe from a Michelin-starred bakery, Lava Cake is a quintessential after-dinner treat.

While Lava Cake is a bit of a rare find, it’s definitely worth trying when it’s on the menu. Curious about what makes the Lava Cake so special? Read on to discover more.

The Lava Cake strain’s lineage

Lava Cake is an epic dessert strain with lots of Cookies influence. It was created by crossing Thin Mint with Grape Pie, two exceptionally sugar-forward strains.

Thin Mint is a part of the Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) family, itself a cross between OG Kush and F1 Durb. Its ancestors include the landrace strains of Hindu Kush and Durban.

Grape Pie is another saccharine strain bred by crossing Cherry Pie with Grape Stomper. Grape Pie is actually a grandchild of F1 Durb, marking the second appearance of the Bay-area favorite in Lava Cake’s family tree.

Other notable ancestors in the Lava Cake lineage include Sour Diesel, Purple Elephant, and Skunk #1.

Is Lava Cake an indica or a sativa?

Lava Cake is a hybrid strain but is typically indica-dominant. Most weed strains in the Lava Cake family tree are indica-hybrids as well.

Lava Cake typically contains an average of 18%-22% THC, with up to 1% CBG. These cannabinoid numbers make Lava Cake an excellent choice for people who do not consume heavy amounts of cannabis since it means the effects aren’t overwhelming.

The terpene profile of Lava Cake plays a significant role in its indica-hybrid classification. Terpenes (aka terps) are responsible for how cannabis tastes, smells, and affects you.

The primary terpenes in the Lava Cake strain are caryophyllene (known for its peppery musk), myrcene (an earthy and rich terp found in mangoes), and humulene (a dank and skunky terpene also in hops).

While none of these terpenes scream sugar rush, the combination of the three and the minor terpenes present results in a deliciously decadent flavor with notes of berry, vanilla, and mint.

Lava Cake strain effects

Smoking or dabbing the Lava Cake strain is a similar experience to enjoying its namesake treat after a big dinner. You’ll likely feel content, satisfied, and ready to relax for the night.

Many consumers report Lava Cake is a great stress reliever, helping them relax after a long day or wind down before bed. Getting the munchies is not uncommon after enjoying this weed strain, so maybe keep an extra treat in the fridge just in case.

With moderate THC content and a somewhat sedative terpene profile, Lava Cake is best enjoyed in the afternoon or evening. While it won’t knock you out, it’s unlikely to energize you, so it may not be ideal for a wake-and-bake sesh.

Lava Cake live resin vs. flower

With so many different ways to consume the Lava Cake strain, you may wonder which method is best for this sinfully rich variety.

Smoking Lava Cake flower is best done with a bowl or joint. The nugs tend to be fairly dense, meaning they’ll likely turn into a fine powder when ground. This may make a joint a bit harder to enjoy, but not impossible.

Dabbing the strain is a great choice since the high terpene content makes it ideal for extraction. Lava Cake live resin offers the full flavor experience of the strain in a simple and convenient modality. One or two dabs of Lava Cake, and you’ll be set for the foreseeable future.
